Posters on post revolution Iranian pop music
The Islamic revolution of 1979 in Iran is one of those topics that has always fascinated me, specifically it’s impact on Iranian pop culture.
Right after the revolution, almost all types of music, other than traditional Iranian music and revolutionary songs were banned by the revolutionary government. Furthermore, women were banned from singing at public venues. However, over-time regulations were slightly relaxed and songs with themes of “pure divine love” and “nature” were tolerated and broadcast on state media. This led to the establishment of a certain type of pop musicians. These artists were middle-aged, scruffy men, that sang about very light romantic themes. The contrast between the artist’s apparent masculinity and the femininity of the lyrics and melodies they sang was my inspiration for creating these posters.
